“PlayStation 2 Emulation Coming to PS4”, Sony Confirms

Last week, Sony confirmed that a PS2 Emulator will be coming to the PS4. Players will once again be able to play their favourite games from a decade ago, with faster frame rates, better resolutions, and trophies. I’m looking forward to playing a long range of classic PS2 games on my PS4, but what I’d like even more is to play an HD remastered version. Here are 9 PS2 games that could make great HD versions.

Bully (Canis Canem Edit)

“Canis Canem Edit is undoubtedly one of the most engaging, enjoyable and immersive experiences to hit console this year – if not longer”. 9.4 out of 10 IGN

Just like Red Dead Redemption and the Grand Theft Auto series, Bully was simple yet chaotic, fun, and had a long-lasting appeal, with fans still talking about it today. The only negative, perhaps, was the easy difficulty, something that could easily be improved in an HD version of the game.

Final Fantasy 12

“Another memorable and highly recommended experience in the process.” 9 out of 10 Gamespot

We’ve seen an HD Final Fantasy X & X-2; we’re thrilled with the announcement of a Final Fantasy 7 remake. Final Fantasy 12 is also a strong possibility and the most likely on this list. Final Fantasy 12 took a step away from the classic gameplay but kept the amazing story and difficulty. It seems Final Fantasy 12-2 was in the works at one point. I doubt we’ll ever see that, but I’d settle for the first one in HD.

Spiderman 2

“The best Superhero game I’ve played.” 8.8 out of 10 IGN

Yes, we’ve seen the movies Spiderman 3, The Amazing Spiderman 1 & 2, and another remake on the way. But with the games, Spiderman 2 was easily the best. It wasn’t the story, the gameplay, or the challenges that made this game, but the countless hours of fun we had swinging around the city, performing cool stunts, and quick lap times. Let’s do that again please in HD.

The Warriors

“If you’ve got a thing for mature-themed action games, The Warriors is well worth your while.” 8.6 out of 10 Gamespot

We’ve seen a Blu-ray release of the movie. Now let’s see an HD remastered version of the game. The Warriors was a surprisingly good game, considering how bad games based on movies can be (too many examples to list here). It also had over 25 years in development, kind of. Fun, simple, and addictive gameplay was enough to make this a great game, one I’d like to play again.

Second Sight

“This storyline is very good and players will quickly be lured into the game.” 8 out of 10 Gamezone

Perhaps a forgotten gem in the PlayStation 2’s large vault. Second Sight had an interesting story, unique powers, and a lasting appeal. A sequel never materialised because, according to its developer, the game failed to generate enough interest. If an HD remastered version came out, maybe that could change.

TimeSplitters 2

“It’s got monkeys in it, which instantly makes it an essential purchase.” 9 out of 10 EuroGamer

Although I’d settle for any one of the TimeSplitters games in HD, the second in the series was the most popular. A fun, chaotic roster made this game a blast to play with friends. Online game modes such as virus and flame tag could seriously give Call Of Duty & Battlefield a run for its money. TimeSplitters 4 is nowhere to be seen sadly, but an HD trilogy would be perhaps even better.

Forbidden Siren

Silent Hills was announced and cancelled this year. Horror games are lacking in today’s gaming world. A Forbidden Siren HD remastered could help change that. It wasn’t the gameplay or story that made this game; it was how defenceless you were against the enemy, which resulted in countless jumps and scares. Forbidden Siren could be a great addition to the future PlayStation VR release.

The Simpsons Hit and Run

“If you’re a fan of the show, you owe it to yourself to give The Simpsons: Hit & Run a look.” 8.3 out of 10 Gamespot

Just like Bully (Canis Canem Edit), The Simpsons Hit and Run was a blast to play. Buying this game was a must for The Simpsons fans. With a rather accurate portrayal of Springfield, players got to enjoy a fun drive, filled with humour and Easter eggs. No other Simpsons game came close, so let’s hope for a The Simpsons Hit and Run HD.

Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance

“Snowblind has put together one of the best engines on PS2 and one of the best hacks in the business” 9.4 out of 10 IGN

The last on the list is a personal favourite of mine, and should also be yours. Dark Alliance was a blast playing with a friend. The hack and slash genre is extremely popular today, especially on the PC, with Diablo 3 being a huge hit. Baldur’s Gate would easily make a successful re-appearance with either a brand new game or an HD remaster.
